NIH to Suspend Seasonal Flu Vaccination Program 10/30/09

Due to overwhelming demand for the seasonal influenza vaccine, the NIH must suspend the immunization effort, effective Friday, October 30.

We sincerely apologize to those employees who anticipated receiving a vaccination but were unable. We ordered the most flu vaccine ever for our immunization program, but demand was unprecedented. Flu season is already here, and over the past several weeks, we’ve already seen an increase in cases of influenza nationwide. This year, we must deal with a new virus – the 2009 H1N1 flu – in addition to the seasonal flu we see at this time every year.

Thanks in large part to your hard work, we’ve been able to connect with businesses, schools, and families across the country to let them know what they can do to prevent flu or care for people who are sick.

Flu vaccine mandatory for those with patient contact 09/08/09

Flu vaccine mandatory for those with patient contact. For the second year, NIH patient-care staff will be required to receive or formally decline the influenza vaccine. Available free of charge, the vaccine will be offered starting in October.

This year NIH may be able to offer vaccines to contractors who have contact with patients. Additional information about this new program will be available within the next month. Such contact employees will need to be vaccinated or complete a form stating their contraindication or reason for declination. Staff who fall under the requirement will be notified by e-mail.
